Former Boston Red Sox ace Pedro  Martinez  shared his opinion on the New York Yankees recently. Now the Yankees need to show him that they are a winning team.

Hall of Fame pitcher and current MLB Network analyst Pedro Martinez offered his opinion on the New York Yankees recently.

After the Yankees beat the Miami Marlin on Tuesday, Pedro called out the Yankees by saying that they don’t look like a winning team. Martinez wrote on Twitter:

The former Red Sox ace defended his comments by saying he’s being honest and people can criticize him as much as they want. He told Marcus Kwesi O’Mard of NESN:

"“I’m not irresponsible for saying what I’m saying. I’m being honest and anybody out there can go ahead and criticize me as much as they want. But what I’m saying is the energy I see in teams that win the World Series or win a postseason spot is different from the one I’m seeing from the Yankees right now.”"

He added:

"“My own experience is telling me, experience I lived, is I’m not seeing the energy in the Yankees.”"

Ouch. If you’re the Yankees or a Yankees fan its got to hurt hearing that. Even though I’m a Yankees fan , I must admit that Pedro is right. The Yankees started July tied atop the Al East with the Red Sox, but have gone a little downhill since then.

More from Empire Writes Back

Since July 1, the Yankees are 25-29 while the Red Sox are 32-10 since the beginning of July. However the Yankees might be heading in the right direction now as they are 11-5 since being swept by the Red Sox at the beginning of August.

Injuries haven’t helped the Yankees be a winning team that we are accustomed to seeing. Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez are still on the DL and on Tuesday Didi Gregorious went on the DL and Aroldis Chapman went on the DL on Wednesday. I think that the injuries have made the Yankees go on a downhill trend. Judge, Sanchez, and Gregorious are players that the Yankees need to have playing, and I think the Yankees will get back to their winning ways when they get back.

Brett Gardner, who is the longest-tenured Yankee, believes that Martinez is a bigger Red Sox fan than a Yankee fan and that they are doing the best they can. Gardner told George A. King III of the New York Post:

“Obviously everyone is entitled to his opinion. He is probably a Red Sox fan more than a Yankee fan. We have the second-best record in the game. They have the best and have a great team that is playing well. We have dealt with injuries, have the toughest schedule and the worst travel. We went to Boston and they beat us four straight. We played Sunday night, they were off [Monday] and we played in Chicago. Then we played a night game on getaway day and didn’t get home ’til 5 a.m. We played 20 games in 20 days. It’s fair to say guys were a little [weary]. We are doing the best we can.”

What the Yankees need to do now is prove Pedro wrong. I think that making it to the World Series or at least the ALCS is what the Yankees need to do to prove Pedro wrong. You don’t make it to the World Series or the championship series if you’re not a winning team, and the Yankee were one game away from going to the World Series last year so I think they can do it.

Next. Three important Yankees down the stretch. dark

While the Red Sox have the best record in baseball, the Yankees have the second-best record at 79-47 and have a shot at winning 100 games this season. Only three teams have won 100 games and finished second in the division since the division format was introduced in 1969. I don’t think the Yankees will win the division even if they win 100 games since they are nine games behind the Red Sox and the Red Sox are showing no signs of slowing down.

I do think that the Yankees can prove Pedro wrong by showing him that they are a winning team. They need to prove him wrong because if they don’t then it would be another win for the Red Sox in the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry and we can’t let that happen.
