The New York Mets are a team that needs a complete overhaul, and fans buying into their recent good fortunes won’t help the matter.

The narrative being pushed over the past few days in the media is the fact that the New York Mets would be a .500 baseball team if it weren’t for the team’s abysmal month of June.

Mets fans cannot fall for this trap being set.

That is exactly the type of trap that has led to the Mets being stuck in the situation that they are now.

The Wilpons push a narrative that, if a few things had broken their way, then the current team would in fact be one that’s in contention.

More from Empire Writes Back

This was what was said last year, which led to the team only signing the likes of Jay Bruce and Todd Frazier, while more attractive free agents went elsewhere.

The Wilpons were able to save the money not spent on high-end free agents who could’ve legitimately changed the team, while saving face in the media as they were able to claim that they spent money to help support the team that was already here.

Most Mets fans seemed satisfied with what the Wilpons had done last offseason, and the owners were able to escape the wrath of Mets fans for the time being.

Yet, as it is clear now, the Mets didn’t really have the foundation for a championship already on the roster, and the free agent additions have all underperformed in this lost 2018 season.

The Mets front office was able to get away with their excuses last year, but the fans should not let the same thing be said for 2018.

Anyone who thinks that there is a championship team hiding in the locker room is sorely mistaken.

This is a team that has the worst offense at home, who mis-manages their farm system, and who puts players in wrong positions instead of developing them at their natural positions.

The Mets lost on Tuesday night due to Dom Smith’s inexperience in left field. Yet instead of letting him learn how to play in the big league’s at his natural first base, they are trying to force him into the outfield so Bruce can play first when healthy.

Bruce, however, the career outfielder, has shown reluctance to moving to first base. So, the Mets are bungling the development of one of their biggest prospects while planning on playing a veteran somewhere he shows no interest in playing.

Next. 3 Mets that must show something for next year. dark

This is only one example of the Mets inability to get out of their own way. A full list of all those instances would be too long to even write.

All of this circles back to the main point: No Mets fan should buy into Fred and Jeff Wilpon’s propaganda.

The fans have fallen for the Wilpon’s trap before, and it is up to them to show that they’ve learned from their mistakes and demand more from this organization.
