Catcher in the Apple

The New York Mets can go three decades without a top catcher considering their rich history of catchers. It is hard to be a catcher in the blue and orange when being compared to Gary Carter and Mike Piazza.

What was once the pride and joy position for Mets fans, has become the most confusing and quite frankly wide open.

Kevin Plawecki is a solid player. He is probably the best defensive catcher on the team. Now, he does not need to prove himself to be on the roster, he needs to continue to emerge as the number one catcher.

Travis d’Arnaud is out for a while but it was his job before he got hurt. Since then, Plawecki has been in a tight battle with Devin Mesoraco behind the plate.

Plawecki’s time on the DL did not affect him like it will d’Arnaud. The Mets could find themselves in a situation where they let Mesoraco walk at the end of the year despite his production.

So, by the end of the year, the Mets can find themselves wanting Plawecki being the starting catcher with d’Arnaud being the best backup one in the league next year.

Do not forget Tomas Nido is in the system too to give depth out of the minors.

Kevin Plawecki can use the dog days of 2018 to prove why he is the next starting catcher for this team. He has the most to prove for next over anyone else at this position for the Mets.

There are plenty of players who need to show they are not expendable this offseason. 2019 for the Mets might not be a great one, but as the days go on, they are looking less and less dark. These players might want to be a part of that.
