New York Mets: 3 Players who need to show us something for 2019
Can Matz stay on the hill
When Steven Matz is rolling and fulfilling his once immense potential, things are great. However, that just does not nearly happen enough anymore.
Matz is injury prone and his style of pitching is not going to last very long. Going off the eye test, it feels as if Matz gets rattled early, he will not recover in time to salvage the win.
He has a lot of work to do to earn his spot in the 2019 rotation.
Yes, he will be on the team in 2019. He will probably be in the starting rotation. It just feels like that is not as encouraging or promising as it could have been.
Steven Matz, right now is injured again, but once he comes back he needs to prove a lot to be a big part of the future.
There is not really the option to trade him because it would be difficult to get anything worth the return.
There might be an open rotation spot in 2019, and if the Mets decide to go in a direction that is not Matz, could you really blame them?
Jason Vargas is making too much money to leave of the rotation so he is likely going to be the fourth behind deGrom, Syndergaard, and Wheeler.
So if Matz does not capitalize on whatever starts he can get for the rest of 2018, the Mets are going to have a problem.
If guys like Seth Lugo or Robert Gsellman can prove something more than Matz, they will be in the rotation.
Matz is far away from his amazing debut in 2015. And if he does not prove anything to the Mets, he might not be someone worth giving a big role to in 2019 which would really be a shame.
