In a case of one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, Austin  Jackson is consistently showing why the New York Mets should keep him around.

The New York Mets have been irrelevant once again as the 2018 season hits the dog days of summer. Injuries and poor play have rendered them unable to compete and once again, we wait til next year.

However, all of a sudden, the team has started to perform better. Just the other day they scored 24 runs against the Philadelphia Phillies. It took them over a week in July to score that many runs.

Personally, I wondered what team I was watching. The Mets have actually become fairly competent as of late.

On July 27th, the Mets made an acquisition that didn’t get a lot of attention at the time but sure is now. The acquisition was for center fielder Austin Jackson.

More from Empire Writes Back

Jackson spent the first four seasons of his career with the Detroit Tigers. He spent time with the Cubs, White Sox, the Mariners, the Indians and the Giants before making his way to New York.

The acquisition probably should have gotten more attention, considering that he hit .318 in 85 games with the Indians last season.

He was hitting .242 for the Giants before being traded to the Rangers and released just a few days later.

Has anyone ever heard the saying, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”?

That is what Austin Jackson is proving to be true and then some for the Mets since arriving in Queens.

In just 22 games, Jackson is hitting .377, posting an on-base percentage of .422, hit two home runs and drove in ten runs.

He has also scored 12 runs and stolen a base in his only attempt.

Austin Jackson has also been solid in center field.

Fans, have you noticed something that coincides with this offensive rise from the Mets? The primary outfielders have been Jackson, Brandon Nimmo and Jose Bautista.

Who is missing? Yoenis Cespedes. The Mets have figured out how to hit without their “big star” in the lineup.

Next. deGrom could win Cy Young after complete game. dark

Now of course we will see Cespedes back at some point next year. At least we think we will.

Either way, Jackson has shown himself to be an able-bodied center fielder. He can hit, run and play defense.

He is only 31 years old. He has good chemistry with the current group, and he could make Bautista a fourth outfielder if they bring him back next year when Cespedes returns.

That’s the way to create some depth.
