New York Mets ace Jacob  deGrom might have the worst record for a Cy Young award finalist ever, but does that mean he doesn’t deserve the award?

Any other season New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom runs away with the Cy Young award with no one even batting an eyelash.

His individual stats are mesmerizing. deGrom has complied 168 innings pitched with 204 strikeouts with a 0.96 WHIP in 25 starts.

The man has just been completely un-hittable this season.

He has given up only 125 hits with only 32 earned runs scored creating an astounding 1.71 ERA.

More from Empire Writes Back

In 50 years of the Cy Young award, only 19 times has a pitcher won the award with an ERA under 2.00.

If deGrom sustains these performances the rest of the season, how could he not receive the award?

It is an individual honor that demonstrates the best pitcher from that season. A win/loss record should not be the deciding factor when a guy has an ERA under 2.00.

Some pitchers ranking high in the MLB have ERA’s over 3.7. Some names like Rick Porcello (4.04) ranks 4th, Jon Lester (3.72) ranks 8th, J.A. Happ (3.86) ranks 9th and Zack Godley (4.11) ranks 11th.

That’s not to mention six guys in the top 15 in wins with over a 3.5 ERA.

DeGrom ranks 59th in the MLB in wins. Jake does not deserve the mere eight wins for the season he has put together.

The Mets rank 29th in the league in team batting average, 25th in slugging and 21st in runs scored.

Some nights deGrom has to generate the offense for himself. And if you think I am exaggerating I have proof.

On August 3rd the Mets played the Atlanta Braves in a game that deGrom got the nod.

Degrom went eight innings and only gave up six hits and two earned runs with nine strikeouts. At the plate he went 1-2 with an RBI.

The Mets end up losing the game 2-1 generating ONLY 2 HITS!

DeGrom generated half the Mets hits and had the only RBI in the game.

He has been a catalyst for the Mets and has single-handedly put the team on his back every fifth day he has toed the rubber.

Giving out the MVP, the success of the team matters.

The award goes to the most valuable player usually going to a guy who is on a playoff contending team or a pennant winner.

Talking about the Cy Young, a pitcher cannot dictate offense for his team he can only throw up zeros on the board, and that is what deGrom has done all season.

Not many pitchers in today’s game have enough in the tank to go nine innings of shut out ball.

This complete game shutout to a playoff contending team in the Phillies who rank 10th in the MLB in runs per game at home can solidify a case for Jacob deGrom as the Cy Young winner.
