New York Giants: Wayne Gallman is a very undervalued Giant
By Nico Doria
With all the hype surrounding New York Giants rookie Saquon Barkley at the running back position, Wayne Gallman can prove to be an undervalued Giant.
In Round 4 of the of the 2017 Draft, the Giants selected Wayne Gallman out of Clemson University.
Some saw Gallman as a steal in the 4th round who could one day compete to be the starting running back.
Entering year two, Gallman’s fate has seen a dramatic dip as the Giants selected all world talent Saquon Barkley with the second overall pick in the 2018 draft.

The problem is, Gallman had a shaky rookie season.
Through the first three games the rookie didn’t receive a touch. Then in Week 4 against the Buccaneers, Gallman had 11 attempts with 42 yards and a receiving touchdown.
Gallman didn’t really have produce much after that until Weeks 14-17 when the season was already out of hand.
However, it was then when Gallman started getting more snaps and touches as the Giants had a forgotten season and looked to the future.
But now, the second year pro can really find his niche and prove to be a valuable asset in a backup role to the Giants this season.
As we all know, Saquon Barkley will be the starting running back.
But, many successful team in the past decade have featured not necessarily a “running back-by-commitee”, but they have multiple backs that are multi-purpose. That’s what the Giants have in Gallman and Barkley specifically.
Since the days of James Starks and Willie Parker in Super Bowls 45 and 43 respectively, if you look at the stats of the teams that won the Super Bowl, not one single running back dominated the rushing touches.
If you even look at the two Giants Super bowls, all Giants fans remember the days of Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw, and even Derrick Ward in 2007. The Giants perfectly executed the balance of multiple running backs on the way to championships.
There will be times though where Barkley dominates the touches and it will be deservingly so because the kid is that talented.
But, when he needs a spill or the Giants want to be dynamic and feature multiple people out of the backfield, Gallman can provide that.
He can catch and is a solid runner. Gallman, which he has clearly shown this pre-season, is the second-most talented runner on this roster.
Wayne Gallman had a sub par first game this pre-season, but in the second game vs the Lions, his talent jumped off the screen.
Gallman averaged 5.2 yards per carry that night and scored a receiving touchdown as he was featured mostly through the first half.
The New York Giants have a lot of talent on this roster. Some positions are deeper than others. But, with this talent at running back, the Giants might prove this season that it could be the most talented position with Barkley and Gallman.
