New York Yankees pitcher Luis Severino is currently going through some struggles. However, the Yankees shouldn’t hit the panic button yet.

We see all the time in sports athletes and teams struggle during the season. New York Yankees ace pitcher Luis Severino is currently struggling. However, the Yankees and Yankees fan shouldn’t hit the panic button just yet.

On Monday, Severino had his worst outing of the season against the New York Mets. He gave up four runs and seven hits in four innings and his record fell to 15-6. In his last five starts, the Yankees are 1-4 and Severino’s ERA in his last five starts is 7.96.

Severino has allowed 30 runs in his last seven starts. That’s five more earned runs then he allowed in the first half of the season. So, what’s wrong with Severino?

The ace thinks he’s making mistakes with his fastball, he told Ken Davidoff of the New York Post:

"“I think I keep doing the same mistakes over and over,”he said. “I’m missing with my fastball. Last time, the same thing happened. … I need to be in more control.”"

The Yankees thought that Sevy had gotten out of his funk against the Chicago White Sox when he went seven innings and allowed three runs in a 7-3 win. Obviously he hasn’t gotten out of the funk, so why is he struggling? Sevy says it’s not because he’s tired.

He continued to tell Davidoff:

"I’m not tired. I’m definitely not tired,I just need to keep working. I’ve been through this in the past and together with [pitching coach] Larry [Rothschild], see what’s going on and try to fix it.”"

Could the struggles be because he is hurt? Manager Aaron Boone doesn’t think so. Boone told Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News:

"“We got to help him get to the bottom of it. Physically I think he’s sound. But we got to get this righted and that’s on all of us because he’s that important. He’s so dynamic when he’s right.”"

If he’s not hurt or tired, then maybe Sevy’s struggles are because he’s tipping pitches. Boone thinks that he might have done it in Boston against the Red Sox.

Tipping pitches is something that Severino gets reminded of when he does it and works on it, general manager Brian Cashman said earlier this year, per Brendan Kuty of NJ.com.

"“He’s had it as part of his challenges. So is it a concern? I mean, obviously when he does we obviously address it and move forward. Sometimes he does it, sometimes he doesn’t do it. When he does obviously he gets reminded about it and works on it.”"

The Yankees are now a season-high 10 games behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL East.

However, now isn’t the time to be worried about Severino’s struggles. It’s only mid-August and Sevy will most likely turn things around and be the ace that he was in the first half of the season.

What the Yankees don’t want to have happen is Sevy still struggling when the playoffs begin.

Right now, it looks like the Yankees will play the wild-card game. If Severino is still struggling when the Yankees play the wild-card game, then it would be time to panic because they might not make it past the division series if they win the wild-card game.
