New York Mets: Michael Conforto turning his season around
One of the biggest keys to the New York Mets future, Michael Conforto, is starting to look like the player that went to the All-Star Game in 2017.
For a majority of the 2018 campaign, Michael Conforto has come nowhere close to matching the caliber he set for himself last season.
In 2017, Conforto hit 27 home runs, while sporting an OPS of .939 in just 109 games.
But then, Conforto blew his shoulder out, and the New York Mets were left wondering about what his future held. Conforto immediately had surgery, and the Mets set the target for his return to be May 1.

In the opposite of everything the Mets and their fans have become accustomed to, Conforto’s rehab was ahead of schedule. Instead of having any setbacks, Conforto seemed constantly eager to move faster than his rehab warranted.
Mets fans were welcomed to a great surprise when the Mets had Conforto in the lineup for the opening of the Mets third series of the season, against the Nationals.
Conforto homered off of Max Scherzer, the Mets swept Washington, and New York was ready for the Mets to cruise to the NL East title.
If only it were so easy.
The Mets have faltered to the bottom of the NL East, and Conforto has spent the entire season trying to find that all-star swing from last year.
He seems to finally be reaching that point.
Over the first half of the month of August, Conforto is batting .289 with an OPS of .863. Before that point, Conforto had been hitting .231 with an OPS of .754.
These drastic improvements have been clear to anyone watching the games as well. Conforto has hit in all but three of the 12 games since the month began, tallying multiple hits in four of those games.
Conforto’s success is key to the Mets competing in the near future, as the front office thinks is somehow possible.
Conforto is controlled through 2022, and if he had not shown this rebound after the major shoulder surgery, the entire future of the outfield would have been in doubt.
But, if Conforto can sustain this stretch, then the Mets have two valuable pieces in Conforto and Brandon Nimmo to man the outfield for the coming years.
Not the worst outcome to get from a lost season.
