New York Giants: Giants can’t mess up Kyle Lauletta like they did Davis Webb
Eli Manning is still capable of having a great season, but it is never too late for the New York Giants to find his replacement of the future. So, they cannot mess up Kyle Lauletta like they have Davis Webb.
The good news for the New York Giants is that most of the people who were responsible for the Giants QB disaster that happened at the end of last year are gone.
However, the bad news for the Giants is that history has a tendency to repeat even if its one person making a bad decision.
Therefore, it is important that the Giants do not mess up Kyle Lauletta and the way he can become the next QB like they already have messed up Davis Webb.

Recently, it surfaced that the plan was to let Davis Webb get starts last season towards the end of the year. Instead, for absolutely no reason, Geno Smith was given a start.
That not only ruined Eli Manning‘s starts streak, but in what is the more important bigger picture, messed up Davis Webb chances to prove he can be the next franchise QB.
The decision to not take out the middle man and not just go right from Eli to Webb is appalling. The fan backlash was justified and left the Giants no choice but to go back to Eli.
So, when the Giants had a perfectly good opportunity to start Davis Webb, in a regular season NFL game vs actual teams, they dropped the ball, big-time.
Obviously, there is the argument that he was simply not ready, if that was the case then there was no point in even benching Eli in the first place. They could have just kept chugging along.
The bigger thing about this, if all this is true, is that it could have hurt Davis Webb’s confidence. Even if he says it does not or did not, not getting the green light over a proven bust like Geno Smith must not feel great.
Then in the pre-season game vs the Browns, Webb looked flat-out bad. However, he was thrown out with the wolves essentially.
Sure, the Giants are focused on getting him reps and playing time, but the quality is better than quantity in this instance.
The Giants need to start Davis Webb in a pre-season game this year, or at least let him go out there with the second team because he needs to get that kind of experience if he is going to be the guy.
The Giants, time after time have butchered the opportunity to give Webb the reps that matter. Of course, he is not going to look good when he was passed over for Geno Smith then thrown into the first pre-season game with nothing around him.
That is why the Giants need to be careful with Kyle Lauletta. The best thing he has that Webb didn’t is competent coaching. Pat Shurmur is a QB whisperer and can do wonders for Lauletta.
It is not even too late to save Davis Webb. He has just been set up to fail multiple times by now. He can still play well to avoid losing even more playing time. It’s just that he has Kyle Lauletta to worry about now too.
Webb is still technically listed as the number two QB, but giving him the backup job after all this would be an unwise decision.
So, the Giants had a lot go wrong for Davis Webb and it might take them a lot of work that could have been avoided in order to save him and give him reps.
However, they also have the option to Lauletta develop normally without all this previous drama. Lauletta is by far set up better to get the backup QB job and be the heir to Eli Manning.
Considering the Giants went with Saquon Barkley, a running back, over one of the QBs in the draft could mean they don’t think Eli’s replacement is on the roster anyway and all this could be just for 2018 as the Giants look beyond that.
For now, just keep an eye on not only how Lauletta and Webb do. Look at the positions they are put in and when they play well or poorly this pre-season. It could get interesting.
