2. Expand the rotation

The New York Yankees are headed into a stretch where rest could be key. The number of teams on the remaining schedule is outlandishly high, and resting pitchers could be vital during this point in the season, especially heading into September call-ups.

The current rotation stands as Severino, Happ, Tanaka, Lance Lynn, and Sabathia with Gray and A.J. Cole as the long relievers out of the bullpen. Adding Adams and/or Sheffield to the rotation could allow the Yankees to do different things.

They could piggyback Adams and Sheffield with starters who, this season, are not going the distance.

For instance, Tanaka/Sheffield and Sabathia/Adams. Another option could be to use a six-man rotation, with Adams and Sheffield either piggybacking or alternating during that sixth spot in the rotation.

This could ease the weight off the current rotation pitchers’ shoulders, giving them another day to recover and get ready for their next start.

The Yankees have a lot of room to go out and experiment with their rotation. The schedule is not that difficult for the next couple weeks so the Yankees could give Adams another shot and give him some  confidence.

Keeping Adams around or even simply brining him back sooner rather than later, allows the Yankees to get it all together and have all the pitching help they could possibly need while the season winds down to its most important stretch.
