New York Yankees: 3 reasons why Chance Adams deserves another chance
Prior to Thursday night’s game, the New York Yankees activated J.A. Happ off the disabled list and sent down Chance Adams. Here are three reasons why the Yankees should give him a second chance.
Following his first start as a New York Yankee after being acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays, J.A. Happ was placed on the 10-day disabled list after contracting hand, foot, and mouth disease.
To fill Happ’s spot in the rotation, the Yankees promoted RHP Chance Adams from AAA to make his MLB debut on Saturday, August 4 in Boston vs the Red Sox.
Despite Adams recording the loss in a 4-1 loss for the Yankees, he pitched well. He allowed three runs on three hits, two of which were home runs, and one of which was hit by the majors’ home run leader, J.D. Martinez.
This past Thursday, Adams was slated to start again, but Happ was ready to be activated off the disabled list.
So, the Yankees did the easy thing to do. They sent down Adams to make room for Happ to start the day that would have been his day to start regardless of what happened with his illness.
J.A. Happ started and got the win that night with a 7-3 victory over the Texas Rangers.
But, there still remains one lingering question. The question that many people are asking is if Chance Adams should get another turn in the rotation?
Here are three reasons why he should:
1. Get a look for next year
Going into next season, the Yankees have Luis Severino and Masahiro Tanaka definitively slated to start the year in the rotation.
Sonny Gray could possibly start the year in the bullpen, for all we know, Jordan Montgomery may start the year on the very end of his rehab from Tommy John surgery, and CC Sabathia is a free agent. Sabathia said he wants to play in 2019, health permitting.
There will be at least one open rotation spot to fill going into Opening Day 2019. Adams is one of the internal options, along with southpaw Justus Sheffield.
Allowing Adams and Sheffield to get some starts during the end of the season could help the team start to gauge if they could be vital pieces to the Yankees starting rotation come 2019.
