For the New York Mets, happy news is hard to come by these days. But, it was announced that David Wright will play innings in a minor league in yet another attempt to come back and play for the Mets.

This David Wright stuff is breaking my heart. If he is not the best New York Met ever, he sure is the best to wear the blue and orange for an entire generation. From the day Mike Piazza left onward, Wright has been the guy. Then, the chronic back issues happened.

Now, the only thing we have left for David Wright is hope that his next comeback attempt is the last one. The Mets and their fans now have that hope again.

Although it seemed silly for Wright to come back to this train wreck that is the 2018 Mets, after thinking about it, it makes sense.

More from Empire Writes Back

One, he’s been on the DL for about two years and is aging rapidly so it really is now or never. Also, since Wright down a few years ago, the Mets still have not replaced his position.

There have been guys close, but not yet. Michael Conforto made a push to be the next face of the franchise, but he had a massive fall off after returning from an injury.

Amed Rosario‘s progress is painfully slow. Dominic Smith is barely even worth mentioning and it’s always risky to dub a pitcher, even one like Jacob deGrom, as the guy because they have rapid, unwarned fall-offs too.

So, aside from the Mets being a mess at the corner bases since he first missed significant time with the back problems, Wright was missed for other reasons. Leadership and having no idea what is next reasons.

But, in terms of baseball and the greater good of his personal health, if this comeback attempt does not work, I don’t see a scenario where one does.

If Wright comes back this year, sure that will be great but that can’t be it. If Wright goes through all this work to come back, it would be to stay around until at least beyond 2019.

Ideally, he comes back gets one or two more full-seasons under him then retires on his own terms on his own two feet.

However, we have been given reasons to be a little uneasy towards that ideal situation based on all his prior setbacks.

This comeback attempt is more about the fans and the organization needing Wright to have a proper send off then it is that they need him for the future.

Sure, they have not really been able to replace him in terms of the next potential captain, but what if he comes back and doesn’t play well? The Mets already have plenty of hitters who couldn’t hit a beach ball off a tee right now.

No, I am not trying to make an argument about how David Wright should not come back. Of course, he should come back if he wants to and he is able to.

What I am saying is that this needs to be it. If he fails again, it will never work. If he keeps having setbacks there is no point. You cannot miss three years or more of a career and come back like normal.

This is it, this is his last chance. And perhaps he is in a better position than most Mets players because regardless of how this ends he will get a nice retirement ceremony and hopefully his numbers in the rafters of Citi Field one day, but how much longer do we have to wait?

The Mets, David Wright, the fans, the doctors, almost nobody has time to keep this going on. Once we know the results of this comeback attempt, that’s it.

He just wants to play baseball again and the fans just want to see one last good run. But if none of those things can happen, it will be a waste of time.

There is no seeing if this works and if not try again kind of situation anymore. I am not a doctor or a baseball coach but I just don’t see how him failing to come back to the majors again and not having to retire is possible.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel for this too. With nothing else working for the Mets right now, maybe this will. Wright and the fans sure deserve one last special run.

However, we all need to be realistic about this situation. The guy has not played in two years, has all the money in the world, and will always be a hero. His loyalty and love for the game gave him all that. Him wanting to keep playing is fine.

But if he cannot play, it will be all but official that the Mets have to move on.

David Wright, in what feels like his tenth attempt to come back, simply needs to. It is now or never. Even if he just plays down in St. Lucie then is on the opening day roster next year, that is better than nothing.

But, if none of those things happen, it’s over. it just does not make sense to otherwise. Because the worst thing about clinging to every last bit of legends we have is making them not seem immortal.

Legends are supposed to never die. This needs to work out or be over before it gets too sad and prolonged to even matter anymore. Nothing would be worse than David Wright not mattering.

Next. Jeff McNeil a future long-term piece?. dark

Wishing you all the best, Captain.
