New York Jets: Three takeaways from Falcons game unrelated to Sam Darnold
Fast Defense
What have we complained about for many years around this team? That the defense is too slow. They always looked like they were a step behind the offense.
That started to change on Friday night against the Falcons. It’s not just the fact that they shut the Falcons out. The “eye” test made it abundantly clear.
In keeping with practices as of late, Nathan Shepherd was in the game early and often. He made a nice stuff in the run game early with the first team and was out there bringing pressure later in the game.
Pressure? The New York Jets defense? It’s been a long time since we have heard of such a thing.
Buster Skrine was back in the slot thanks to the arrival of Trumaine Johnson. He looked much more comfortable, making a big play on a screen pass. As they said during the telecast, Buster Skrine busted up a screen.
Poetry in motion.
As a group, the defense ran to the football and was efficient with their tackling. J.J. Wilcox got beaten on a long pass or two later in the game, but he can lay guys out with a big hit. He certainly is an effective safety playing down in the box.
Needless to say there was a lot to be happy about on Friday night if you are a Jets fan.
