Trenton  Cannon Had a Mixed Night

Trenton Cannon has turned heads all through training camp so far. Many were excited to see him play including myself, mentioning him in the preview.

With Elijah McGuire already out and Isaiah Crowell leaving the game to be evaluated for a head injury, we saw quite a bit of Cannon against the Falcons.

On the ground, he was quick through the hole. When Cannon saw a creak, he hit it and was able to pop through with assertiveness. For the game he carried the ball 11 times for 40 yards, good for just under four yards per carry (3.9).

Cannon had some difficulty coming out of the backfield as a pass receiver. He did catch three passes but for only five yards. The worst, however, was when he ran a “go” route down the left sideline. He blew past his defender but didn’t look up for the football. It looked like he forgot to do so.

To really take that role on as a change of pace back, he is going to have to be careful on the outside as a receiver.

The punt returns didn’t go so well as he muffed two. Yes he recovered them but that won’t make any coach feel comfortable with him back there. A special teams impact will be important for Cannon in order to stick here, so we will have to watch how this goes over the coming weeks.
