New York Jets: Five players to watch vs. the Atlanta Falcons
Trenton Cannon
Here is a guy that entered camp on nobody’s radar but enters tonight’s game on everybody’s radar.
The Jets selected Trenton Cannon with their sixth round pick in the 2018 draft and there wasn’t a lot expected of him. He can fly, boasting 4.4 speed but coming from a small school like Virginia St., nobody expected much other than a guy with return potential.
So far in camp, everyone has been dead wrong.
Cannon has surprised everyone with not only return potential but his ability to run away from defenders at the second level. He talked about how he has surprised other players with Darryl Slater of NJ.com:
"“I knew it wasn’t going to be easy,” he said. “I knew it wasn’t going to be that tough for me, like everybody expected, coming from Division II. There are a lot of Division I guys out here, and Division I is supposed to have the better athletes. I’m just showing them that coming from a smaller school, we can play, too, at this level. Football is football. I’ve been playing all my life. At any level – high school, college – my speed has been helping me the same way.”"
Speed is speed. Cannon has shown that so far during training camp. He did leave with an injury the other day but was right back at it.
With Elijah McGuire laid up for a bit longer with his injury, there is an opening at third running back. Cannon is doing all that he can to earn that spot.
Here is his first chance to show what he can do against an opposing NFL defense. We may even see him return kicks during tonight’s game. Either way look for a strong dose of Trenton Cannon.
Cannon is one to watch, starting tonight.
