New York Mets ace Jacob  deGrom deserves Cy Young consideration. Will the voters be smart enough to recognize it and vote for him?

New York Mets fans are already aware of this, but the one shining light on a very bad 2018 has been Jacob deGrom. Frankly he has been the only reason to turn on the games this year.

Jacob deGrom has been, in short, dominant. Some might have a hard time realizing that they read his 5-7 record, but the 1.85 ERA gives the world a clue about how good he has really been.

The ERA is far and away the best in the league. Chris Sale is second in the league with a 2.04 ERA. But his recent dominance goes even further than just the surface. Let me show you a couple of stats to illustrate.

Take a look at this first one from Anthony DiComo, Mets writer for MLB.com:

More from Empire Writes Back

After the loss his record in those 19 starts did fall to 3-7. Three runs or less in 19 starts straight, yet he has lost seven times and posted ten no-decisions.

Kevin McAlpin, Braves reporter noted that deGrom has allowed four runs in 33 innings this season against the Braves. His record is 0-5.

There are guys that pitch to hard luck, but this is just ridiculous. It’s hard to find someone who has ever had the type of bad luck deGrom has had.

Now if you want to talk about quality starts, Matt Ehalt from Newsday had a very interesting stat to chew on.

Ehalt writes that the Mets have scored eight runs in deGrom’s last seven starts, spanning 51 innings. Folks, that is over seven innings per start.

Those are quality starts and then some. Yet the Mets repeatedly have nothing to show for it.

It’s not easy being Jacob deGrom in 2018.

Next. Clueless Mets do nothing at the deadline. dark

Here’s the thing. For anyone paying attention, deGrom has also been the best pitcher in the majors in 2018. Despite the fact that he may end with a losing record, this is a fact that cannot be denied.

Will the voters be smart enough to see it? Admittedly, it will be easy for them to dismiss someone from the Mets. They certainly haven’t been a significant part of the 2018 season. It’s easy to forget about everyone on the roster.

But that would be misguided. The dominance shown by Jacob has been second to none. To go seven plus innings as often as he has and to allow 3 runs or less has just been something to see.

He deserves the Cy Young. Will he get it? Time will tell.
