On Thursday night, the New York Yankees got obliterated by the Red Sox. But what does this mean for the Friday night matchup?

On Thursday night, the New York Yankees lost by a score of 15-7. Yes, that is correct they lost 15-7 and CC Sabathia lasted only three innings before handing the ball over to the bullpen with a 4-2 lead.

The moment Sabathia turned it over to the bullpen is when everything hit the fan.

The first pitcher to come in from the bullpen was Jonathan Holder who, well, wasn’t to great to say the least.

Holder did not get a single out and still let up five hits and seven runs. When Holder came in the score was 4-2 Yankees but when he left it was 9-4 Red Sox, and he didn’t even get an out.

The Yankees would go through three more relievers before the game ended with a 15-7 Red Sox win. How do you come back from a 15-7 loss especially when it’s the first game of a four game set against your rival?

Short-term memory that’s how.

The Yankees need to come out Friday with a reset mind and come out strong. In the first two innings Thursday night the Yankees looked fantastic, both Didi Gregorius and Aaron Hicks homered leading to a 4-0 Yankees lead.

On the other side of the ball, CC Sabathia was struggling with his pitch placement as he had walked four batters and had bases loaded in the third but managed to get out of it unharmed.

Sabathia didn’t look horrible but Aaron Boone decided to let the bullpen do their job, which they did not.

If you want to come back from that kind of loss you need to have faith in your starters, but not too much. Last night, the Yankees went through four relievers so in order for the Yankees to survive Friday night, Luis Severino needs to do his job.

If we get the Luis Severino we’ve seen just about all season with the exception of the last two games, the Yankees are in a good place.

However, if we get the Luis Severino who let up 19 hits and 13 runs in his last two games the Yankees are in trouble.

In order to come back from a 15-7 loss, the Yankees will need their pitchers, primarily Luis Severino to go to work and not let up seven runs in an inning like Jonathan Holder.

If the Yankees put together a few innings like the first and the second on Thursday night, they should have no problem escaping Boston with a game two win.
