New York Yankees: Lance Lynn is here to save the rotation
By Alex Jordan
The New York Yankees have sent Sonny Gray to the bullpen. Lance Lynn will take Sonny’s spot in the rotation and save it from becoming a disaster.
The New York Yankees rotation changed on Thursday as general manager Brian Cashman announced that Sonny Gray will move to the bullpen. The Yankees newest acquisition, Lance Lynn will take Gray’s spot in the rotation.
It’s not surprising that Gray was moved to the bullpen given that he is struggling. Yankees manager Aaron Boon said on Wednesday that Gray’s rotation spot was at risk, according to ESPN.
On Wednesday afternoon, Gray allowed seven runs, eight hits, and walked two in two and two-thirds inning against the awful Baltimore Orioles.
This season, Gray is 8-8 with a 5.56 ERA in 21 starts. However he’s not mad about being sent to the bullpen, he told Manny Randhawa of MLB.com:
"“At the end of the day, I want them to do whatever is best to help us win, whatever that may be, Whatever happens, if I get the ball in five days, then I’m going to take it and I’m going to go compete, and I’m going to do my best and I’m going to try to put us in a good position to win the game. But if not, then I’m going to be right there doing whatever I’m called upon [to do].”"
Gray then told Ethan Sears of the New York Post that he doesn’t think that his days as a starting pitcher are over.
However, moving a struggling Gray to the bullpen is the right move for the Yankees as they try to catch the Boston Red Sox in the AL East.
While the Yankees rotation behind Luis Severino hasn’t been great, Lynn will save the Yankees rotation from becoming a disaster.
Lynn, who was acquired on Monday in a trade with the Minnesota Twins, made his pinstripes debut on Wednesday, allowing five hits, no walks, and struck out five.
Not bad for a Yankees debut!
Putting Lynn in the rotation is important for the Yankees. While the Yankees filled their pitching needs by acquiring J.A. Happ, Happ is now on the 10-day DL due to hand, foot, and mouth disease.
Having Lynn in the rotation instead of Gray means that the rotation will start to get better instead of staying mediocre or where it was.
While Gray is in the bullpen for now, the Yankees rotation just got “Sonny-ier” with the addition of Lynn.
