Skjei to be the guy?

The New York Rangers did not make a ton of head-turning moves this offseason. They focused on the draft and had a great one. Also, they used a lot of money to re-sign much of their talent.

One of those contracts, however, stood out the most and it was giving Brady Skjei a six-year deal. He was a restricted free agent, but that barely applies here.

Of all the players the Rangers brought back, and all the players they did not go out and get, giving Skjei six years shows how high the Rangers are on him and his potential to lead this team into the future.

The talented defenseman has talent that is hard to come by and the Rangers were smart to give him more than the other players. Skjei eats up minutes, plays a ton of games, and is super reliable on the ice.

He is still maturing as a player and has not even hit his prime yet, he is only just getting there. There is a chance Skjei takes the leap this year production wise and leadership wise.

There is plenty of time and the Rangers should be in no-rush to dub anyone as “the guy” and they do not even need a captain this year. But, expect Skjei to make a push to become both of those things this year.

The New York Rangers have little expectations coming into this season. It is not likely they will be good so it is smart to focus on the little things
