New York Yankees: Yanks vs Red Sox series preview, matchups, and predictions
Game One Matchup and Prediction
Game One:
Yankees @ Red Sox
8/2 7:10pm
Fenway Park
CC Sabathia
In game one, CC Sabathia will be taking the mound for the Yankees in an effort to give the Yanks the early series lead.
Sabathia has been very consistent this season and you know what you’re getting out of him every time he steps on the hill.
On the season, Sabathia has a 3.53 ERA and a 6-4 record. In addition to that, Sabathia has gone up against Boston twice this season, with the Yankees winning one and losing one.
The first time Sabathia went up against Boston this season he went for only four innings allowing nine hits and four earned runs ultimately leading to a loss.
The second matchup, however, went much better than the first. Sabathia went seven strong allowing only six hits, one earned run and one walk, leading to a 8-1 Yankees win. If the Yankees get this Sabathia there is a good chance they walk out of game one with a win.
Brian Johnson
After Chris Sale was placed on the 10-day DL due to shoulder inflammation, Brian Johnson was given the nod to start game one against the Yankees.
Johnson has played in more of a reliever role for the Red Sox. But, since the Sox don’t have Sale, he’s gonna need to step up and be a starter until Sale returns.
On the season, Johnson has a 3.45 ERA and a 1-3 record. With Johnson on the mound the Yankees will have a great shot to take game one.
Johnson has gone up against the Yankees three times, all three of which were in relief going 1.0 innings, 0.1 innings and 2.0 innings. In the three games combined Johnson has let up two hits and zero runs.
When Johnson does start for Boston, don’t expect him to make it through the fifth inning as that is not the player he is. Expect the Yankees to jump on him early and take advantage of his time on the mound before the bullpen takes over.
Prediction: NYY 5 BOS 2
Due to the fact that Brian Johnson is taking the mound for Boston, the Yankees will be taking the first game of the series.
Giancarlo Stanton, Did Gregorius and company will jump on Johnson early ultimately taking him out of the game before the fifth inning while CC Sabathia goes to work for the Yanks.
Sabathia will go seven strong holding a 4-2 lead before turning it over to Zach Britton and the bullpen who hold the game leading to a Yankees win, bringing them that much closer in the AL East.
