One of the New York Yankees’ newest additions has been placed on the 10-Day DL due to hand, foot and mouth disease. But how does this affect the Yankees going forward?

For the second time in two weeks hand, foot and mouth disease has hit a New York pitcher. On the last occasion it was Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard, but now it has hit one of the Yankees newest additions, J.A. Happ.

J.A. Happ has been placed on the 10-Day DL due to his fight with hand, foot and mouth disease. Hand, foot and mouth disease is a highly contagious disease which causes blisters or sores in the mouth as well as rashes on the hands and feet.

Because of the rashes it would be very difficult for Happ to make his scheduled appearance against Boston on Saturday. With that, he has been placed on the 10-Day DL and will miss at least two scheduled starts.

But how exactly does that affect the Yankees in his two starts and who will start in his place?

This will hurt the Yankees quite a bit seeing Happ was fantastic in his first start for the Yankees.

In his first start for the Yankees, Happ went six innings strong in which he let up only three hits and one run. It was quite a great first impression in New York and it looked as if he’d be the pitcher the Yankees had needed.

Now with Happ out at least 10 days, and likely two starts, it looks like Luis Cessa will get the nod in his place. Cessa has started in only three games for the Yankees this season but has made a total of eight appearances in which he has a 3.10 ERA.

If Cessa does in fact start in Happ’s place, the Yankees will be getting someone who has control over multiple pitches rather than relying heavily upon his fastball such as Happ. In his two most recent starts Cessa has gone six innings and 5.1 innings allowing the Yankees to win one and lose the other.

In the two games combined, Cessa allowed a total of two runs and seven hits. With all things considered Cessa is quite a great replacement for the time being and the Yankees will be in good hands while Happ recovers from this rare disease.
