Trenton Cannon

Our second player is another sixth round pick, this time in the 2018 draft.

Trenton Cannon was selected by the Jets out of little Virginia State. Standing at 5-11, 185 pounds, he isn’t a big back by any means, but he can fly. His forty time was 4.40 seconds and his 10 yard split was under 1.5 seconds (1.49).

Heading into camp, most experts felt we would see Cannon vying for a position as a kick returner. However, the Elijah McGuire injury has opened up reps and Cannon has taken advantage.

According to both Slater and Rich Cimini, Cannon has looked quite good as a running back thus far. Cimini observed that the defense needs to “watch out” if Cannon gets room to run. When he does, he is gone!

The other running back who has gotten extra reps is Thomas Rawls and that hasn’t gone so well. He has fumbled twice in four practices, according to Darryl Slater in a recent podcast appearance.

Personally I have been high on Cannon since the day he was selected. His stats speak for themselves, even though he came from a small school.

At the very least, he is making a case to be the third running back during McGuire’s absence. The Jets will definitely running their game by committee. Cannon is an able-bodied, change of pace type of back.
