Derrick Jones

More from Empire Writes Back

Jones was an afterthought in the 2017 draft. We all thought the Jets would work on the cornerback position in 2017 and they did.

However, not until the sixth round when Derrick Jones was selected out of Mississippi.

Jones didn’t play a lot during his college career, with only two interceptions and 54 total tackles in 27 career games.

He hasn’t posted any stats during his NFL career but is there potential for that to change?

According to Darryl Slater, Jones has been coming on during camp days three and four. In day four he tipped a Sam Darnold pass causing an interception.

He posted an interception on day three as well as one on day two. It has been a great start for Jones, obviously.

Why is it worth noting? We really don’t know who is behind the frontline cornerbacks. Trumaine Johnson, Morris Claiborne and Buster Skrine are three guys that we know are going to play.

Fourth cornerbacks don’t get a ton of playing time, but the position is certainly open. Derrick Jones is well on his way to making a good case that he has earned that position with the Jets.
