Yesterday the New York Yankees traded first baseman Tyler  Austin and pitcher Luis  Rijo to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for right hander Lance  Lynn. But was this the right move?

The New York Yankees have added yet another starting pitcher in right hander Lance Lynn. In exchange the Yankees traded Tyler Austin and Luis Rijo to the Twins. This move was clearly in an effort to stack up the pitching rotation that has been the Yankees main weakness.

With the addition of Lynn the Yankees now have six starting pitchers on the staff. The staff looks like this at the moment:

  1. Luis Severino
  2. Masahiro Tanaka
  3. C.C. Sabathia
  4. J.A. Happ
  5. Sonny Gray
  6. Lance Lynn

With this being said there is a very good chance one of these pitchers gets moved into the bullpen, or traded in an effort to build elsewhere. The most likely being Sonny Gray who has struggled this season with a 5.08 ERA and an 8-7 record.

If he got moved to the bullpen he would try and find time alongside a mix of Aroldis Chapman, Dellin Betances, Zach Britton, David Robertson and more. If this was the case it is likely Gray would be placed into an early bullpen pitcher, someone who comes in around the sixth inning or so before Betances, Britton, Robertson and Chapman take over.

The other scenario could be to trade Gray, potentially for Cameron Maybin who the Yankees are reportedly making a move for. A trade for Maybin would be to add to the already stacked outfield and in an effort to have a second option if someone were to get hurt, like Aaron Judge is right now.

But once again, just a scenario and there is still the option of using a six man rotation in order to see how it works. If the Yankees did use a six man rotation it would likely only be temporary to determine who if anyone could be moved to the bullpen or somewhere else.

Another question made by this trade is what will happen with Domingo German? Not necessarily this season but more so in the future. German pitched in 19 games for the Yanks before moving down to the minors and he was not great but there were games where he showed promise.

After all he is somewhat young so he has a little time to grow into himself. However, with this addition it looks as if the Yankees have given up on German for now, who is currently sidelined due to injury.

Next. Talking about life without Judge. dark

This trade not only changes the pitching rotation but it also changes up things at first base. With Greg Bird consistently injured Tyler Austin had been playing quite a bit in his place. Austin was playing decently but now without Austin, Neil Walker becomes the backup first baseman.

Walker is a utility infielder but he’s not the best first baseman and when Greg Bird inevitably gets injured again, the Yankees could be in a tough spot. With this being said don’t be surprised if the Yankees make another move today, or in the offseason for a first baseman.

If the Yankees do in fact make a move for a first baseman, you know where to go to see how it impacts the team.
