The New York Mets traded arguably their best player over the weekend in Asdrubal  Cabrera. In the trade, the Mets got a prospect, however, the value in trading him comes from within the Mets themselves.

Asdrubal Cabrera is leading the New York Mets in almost every offensive category this season.  That is still at the time of this post. However, he is a Phillie now and that is a good thing.

The Mets got a pitching prospect in Franklyn Kilome. The Mets could have gotten more but the Phillies, in what the Mets truly look for in a trade, will pay millions off his contract.

However, there is still a silver lining in this trade. The Mets now have plenty of room to see what they have in their younger players which is a beautiful thing.

More from Empire Writes Back

With Cabrera being gone, second base is now open for Jeff McNeil. The Mets also Phillip Evans and Luis Guillorme up to the majors. All the Mets have to do is bench Jose Reyes and there is room for all.

Considering the Mets are showing no direction, might finish last in National League, and want to get out any contract possible, the most the fans can ask for is to see what the youngsters can provide.

Although the sample size from players like Guillorme is not exactly encouraging, neither is seeing guys like Jose Reyes in the lineup every night.

And even though Cabrera seemed to be pretty happy in Queens there is a pretty solid chance he was going to walk anyway at season’s end.

So, the fact that him being gone opens up room for some rookies to get some reps seems alright.

The Mets did get a pitching prospect in Kilome who is only in Double-A. That is why the value of moving Cabrera comes from within the Mets themselves.

If all else fails with the player they got for him, it still helps the Mets future by seeing what the players replacing him can bring to the table in the future.

The trade, to an extent, opens the door for the Mets to be all-in on Amed Rosario too. He has been the guy. But now, only an injury will keep him out of the lineup.

Trading Asdrubal Cabrera is only a small piece of what the Mets need to do to get better. But right now, it’s all about the younger players and see where the Mets need to bolster their system.

Next. Mets beginning the youth movement. dark

By not having a player like Cabrera out there anymore, it does exactly that. So, even though the Asdrubal trade might not have seemed so bad in and of itself, its value lies deeper into how the Mets can move forward and beyond 2018 now.
