It’s a bad year for the New York Mets as we know, but players like Jeff  McNeil and Brandon  Nimmo show potential for the future.

The 2018 season has been over for the New York Mets for quite some time now. Between the injuries and the bad losses, a run that reminds us of the 2015 season seems next to impossible. It’s on to 2019 for the team in Flushing.

Yes they recently won their series over the Padres, marking the first series the Mets have won in two months. Steven Matz earned a win against the Pirates. But that doesn’t mean a run is coming.

With Yoenis Cespedes out for the season, the focus still is on 2019 and beyond. Jeurys Familia is gone and more are expected to be in the next few days. This team will look very different next season.

However, there have been a couple of players that have shown their potential to have a bright future here in New York. We have talked extensively about Brandon Nimmo. The newest player who has been a positive force is Jeff McNeil.

Fans had been anxiously waiting for his arrival and with good reason. He was simply tearing it up in the minor leagues.

In six years in the minors McNeil has a career average of .311. He started 2018 in Binghamton and was hitting .327 with 14 homers and 43 RBI.

He received a quick call up to AAA Las Vegas after just 31 games. Did the higher level of competition bring McNeil down?

Nope. In 57 games he was hitting a whopping .368 with five homers and 28 RBI. That’s one way to make your mark after being called up to the next level.

McNeil made his first appearance in the big leagues just a few days ago on July 24th. How did that go? He promptly dropped a single in his first at bat.

Welcome to the major leagues, Mr. Jeff McNeil.

Thursday night against the Pirates he posted another hit in two at bats. McNeil was also hit by a pitch and scored a run. McNeil is making his mark and playing like a guy that deserves to stay here.

As Mets fans we have taken a lot of shots at the minor league system and with good reason. When we see players like Dominic Smith come to the big leagues far from being ready, we get frustrated.

Guys like Nimmo and McNeil give fans hope. It doesn’t make anybody happier about the Jeurys Familia trade when they received pennies on the dollar, don’t get me wrong. That didn’t help the organization on the back-end.

If the Mets can nurture these two guys, they can be the catalyst to a bright future for this team. Call me an optimist, but these are two talented pieces to build around.
