New York Giants: Sam Beal injury is a big blow to defense
By Alex Jordan
The New York Giants started training camp on Wednesday. However, their defense took a huge hit as they lost rookie Sam Beal to a shoulder injury.
New York Giants rookie cornerback Sam Beal’s season is over before it even begins due to an injury.
According to ESPN’s Dianna Russini, Beal will be out for the season due to a shoulder injury.
Beal, who has a history of shoulder issues, aggravated a pre-existing shoulder injury during his first NFL practice on Monday, as his shoulder pooped when he tangled with a teammate during practice on Tuesday, according to Matt Lombardo of NJ.com.
Beal was at practice on Wednesday and took part in warm-ups and install periods. He didn’t participate in any contact or one-on-one drills. He will likely have surgery as that is the best option.
The New York Giants gave up a third-round draft pick in 2019 to pick Beal in the supplemental draft. They were hoping that Beal would addd depth to their secondary.
Giants coach Pat Shurmur told Jordan Raanan of ESPN:
"“Sam’s a very, very talented guy, His movement skills are tremendous and we feel like he could compete to make our team. We felt good about him, we got a chance to visit with him, and he was available, so we committed to him.”"
Beal being out for the season is a huge blow to the Giants defense. They now don’t have a lot of depth at the cornerback position.
Janoris Jenkins and Eli Apple are projected to be the starters at the cornerback position. Donte Deayon, William Gay, and B.W. Webb could be are the Giants other cornerback, so the Giants might be hurting at the cornerback position all year since they don’t have a lot of depth.
The Giants defense might struggle to perform well with Beal out. Beal had 92 tackles, two tackles for loss, and two interceptions in three seasons at Western Michigan.
He’s good on defense and probably could make some big plays if needed, so the Giants defense will need to step up and perform because they will struggle if they don’t.
Beal’s shoulder injury might be the worst news for the Giants defense and the season hasn’t even started yet.
