Managerial Responsibility

EWB: I’ve sensed a divide on Mets Twitter, some fans want Mickey out, some want to give him another chance. What do you think? I think he deserves another chance because of the team he has been given.

MV: I would agree that the roster hasn’t been great. I would suggest that he hasn’t been great in spite of that. What’s telling about Mickey right now is that this is the guy that handed in the wrong lineup card. You hardly ever hear that as one of the things that Mets fans complain about when they complain about the manager.

I do think that his day-to-day has been lacking. I believe he hasn’t lost the clubhouse. There certainly have been too many games when they play with a lack of energy.

You know, you look at a team like the Rays who I think are a very well-managed team. You’d have a hard time telling me that even a diminished Mets team is that much worse than the Rays. The Rays play in a tougher division and they’re at .500, a game or two over .500.

To me that’s what a well-managed team looks like. All of that being said, I think his staying or firing will depend upon the general manager. I think he has a good chance of staying if it’s one of these three guys and I think it gets a little dicier if someone else gets the job.
