If you haven’t realized yet, the New York Mets have been pretty horrible this season boasting one of the worst records in the league, and they just got even worse.

One of the exceptions to the New York Mets season has been Yoenis Cespedes who has played well, but on Saturday night in the Bronx he went down yet again. Saturday night Cespedes injured his heel and because of it he will need surgery which will sideline him for 8-10 months, ending his season.

The surgery will be on both of his heels and the goal is to repair calcification around his achilles. With Cespedes out for the remainder of the season and possibly beyond that, the Mets are in the worst position they’ve been in all season.

Cespedes out for the season means yet another Met on the DL. Cespedes joins a list of players including but not limited to Jay Bruce, Todd Frazier, and Noah Syndergaard who have all gone down to an injury for a long period of time. If the Mets 2018 season were a book it would be titled “What-If”.

The Mets season has just been a tale of injury after injury and we haven’t seen this team play to their fullest because they’ve never had a full squad. With Cespedes out for the season this shifts the outfield quite a bit.

The outfield layout is now Jose Bautista in right, Brandon Nimmo in center and Michael Conforto in left. That is however subject to change once Jay Bruce comes back from the DL.

But none the less, that is an outfield of a player who couldn’t find a team until the season started and once he did he signed a minor-league contract in Bautista. A player whose positions are labeled as “Outfielder and Pinch-Hitter” in Nimmo, and a player in Conforto who well just isn’t great.

With that being said you can see that the Mets are in the worst position they’ve been in all season. No Cespedes, no Bruce, no Frazier, no Syndergaard and they’ve gone 5-5 in their last ten. Not great that’s for sure.

The Mets only diamond in the rough is Jacob deGrom who has been his normal self and is doing the best he can to keep this team above the surface, but is still a daily fixture in trade rumors. Buckle in Mets fans because there’s still quite a bit of the season left to play and it doesn’t appear to be getting any better.
