New York Yankees: Yanks need to consider sending prospect Albert Abreu to Giants
By Alex Jordan
The New York Yankees are looking for a starting pitcher as the trade deadline nears. Prospect Albert Abreu could be traded to the San Francisco Giants in order to get a pitcher.
After losing the Manny Machado sweepstakes to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the question for the New York Yankees is will they get a starting pitcher before the trade deadline? If they do then the pitcher might just come from the San Francisco Giants.
According to Brendan Kuty of NJ.com, the Giants looked at the lower levels of the Yankees farm system and were impressed by right-handed pitcher Albert Abreu.
A source with knowledge of the Giants’ personnel decisions said the Yankees prospect is similar to Luis Severino.

“If you squint hard, there are shades of Yankees ace and two-time All-Star Luis Severino in Abreu, but control issues are a concern,” the source told Kuty.
Abreu was acquired by the Yankees in a trade with the Houston Astros in November 2016. He is the Yankees third best prospect, according to MLB.com, which ranks him as the 60th prospect overall in baseball.
This season, Abreu is 3-3 with a 4.28 ERA in ten starts with High-A Tampa. He has been on the disabled list since June 30.
You don’t need me to tell you that the Yankees are in need of a starting pitcher. Brian Cashman has said that he’s been in contact with a lot of teams about starting pitching. But should the Yankees give up one of their prospects just to get a starting pitcher?
While they won’t rush Abreu to the majors just so they can fill their pitching need, the Yankees should consider sending Abreu to the Giants.

If they send Abreu to San Francisco, then they could fill their pitching need. The pitcher they get from the Giants might not be what they want, but it would be a solution for the rest of this season and they could go after a starting pitcher in the offseason.
But, who would the Yankees get in return for Abreu?
One option is Jeff Samardzija, who the Giants have let the Yankees know is available, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
However, Samardzija probably isn’t the best choice since he went on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation and is struggling as he had a 6.25 ERA in the first half of the season.
Madison Bumgarner could be another option for who the Yankees could get for Abreu. However, I don’t see the Giants giving Bumgarner, who is 3-3 with a 2.90 ERA this season and is a four-time All Star.
I guess you could say that it’s a bummer that Bumgarner probably won’t be going to New York. Derek Holland is probably the Giants best choice to send to the Bronx for Abreu. Holland is 5-8 with a 4.09 ERA and will be a free agent at the end of the season.

While Toronto Blue Jays starter J.A. Happ might be the Yankees best option for a starting pitcher, they should consider trading Abreu to the Giants in case they don’t get Happ or another better option.
