New York Yankees: How Manny Machado could work
With trade talks reportedly heating up between the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles, how would it logistically work for Machado to play in Pinstripes?
The New York Yankees have been linked to Manny Machado for years now, but with Machado nearing free agency in the upcoming offseason, could we see him in Pinstripes soon? With Machado heading to free agency when the offseason comes around would it make sense to trade for him?
Since the Yankees are currently the third best team in Major League Baseball, other moves would have to be made in order for Machado to work. Machado would bring a lot of talent to an already stacked Yankees lineup and he could potentially push the Yanks past the Red Sox in the AL East.
It has been reported that if Machado were to be traded to the Yankees the Orioles would want the Yankees top prospect, Justus Sheffield in return. With that and the fact that the Yankees have reportedly made a ‘strong offer’ for Machado according to Jon Heyman, is Machado a serious possibility?
But what does ‘strong offer’ mean? Does that mean Justus Sheffield is in play? Whatever it means, it appears the Yankees are serious about reeling in the All-Star and MVP candidate. But how could it work out and what other moves would the Bronx Bombers have to make in order to fit in Machado?

Manny Machado has said on multiple occasions that he would only sign with a team that would play him at shortstop, not third base. Machado made the switch back from third base to short stop prior to the 2018 season, and he hasn’t looked back since.
The Orioles slugger is not only great at the plate but he is also a defensive powerhouse. But since the Yankees already have Didi Gregorious at short, how would it work to add Manny Machado into the mix?
The only way this could work would be if the Yankees traded away Gregorious in order to make room for Machado. But this is a big risk seeing Machado would be a free agent come November. But would it be worth the risk to go after Machado who could potentially put the Yankees over the edge?
Let me ask you this, was it worth it for the Cubs to trade for Aroldis Chapman in 2016? In order to make a run at the World Series the Cubs traded Gleyber Torres and more to the Yankees for Aroldis Chapman who would go onto help them win the World Series. The Cubs did this fully aware that there was a chance he would leave them when the offseason came around.
That was exactly what happened, after winning the World Series Chapman decided to leave Chicago and re-joined the team that traded him, the Yankees. Personally I believe that Chapman was worth it for Chicago because without him you potentially lose to the Indians.
So if the Yankees trade for Machado, win the World Series and fail to bring him back is it worth it? If the Yankees decide it is worth the risk then they need to do something with Didi Gregorious in order to make New York more desirable.
That something would be to trade him for a starting pitcher, someone such as Patrick Corbin who is reportedly available. A trade for Corbin would involve something such as Didi Gregorious and a prospect like Matt Sauer.
In Gregorious the Diamondbacks get their shortstop back who is a giant step up from current shortstop, Nick Ahmed. With Sauer the Diamondbacks get the Yankees number ten prospect and someone who has a very bright future ahead of him.
In Corbin the Yankees get a starting pitcher who has a 3.09 ERA which gives the Yankees a solid rotation of Severino, German, Sabathia, Tanaka and Corbin. Whatever the case may be, if the Yankees are going to make a play at Manny Machado something needs to be done with Didi Gregorious, as sad as that may be for us Yankee fans.
