Good news as the New York Mets and the league head into the All-Star break. The Mets’ number two prospect, Peter Alonso, hit a home run in the future’s game. It means way more than one might think.

The New York Mets have almost nothing going for them. For the second straight season, the fans are actually looking forward to the All-Star break. No one should be forced to watch this dreadful team in 2018.

Although the Mets played admirably in splitting the series with the Nationals over the break, the same mistakes and dreadful managing all but cement that this year is over.

However, on Sunday afternoon there was a break into the case that is the Mets’ future. The Mets’ first base prospect, Peter Alonso, hit a moonshot in the game and it means everything we think it does.

Peter Alonso probably needed to be called up weeks ago. However, that obviously never happened.

Also, the Mets’ management claims that the team will not bring him up until 2019. But his home run, on a big stage, when times are dark for the organization, is tough to ignore. He was the lone bright spot for the entire Mets team on Sunday.

If there is anything that the Mets have going for them, even if it is looking into the 2019 season, it is Peter Alonso.

With all the rumors swirling around and the trade deadline approaching there is no way or knowing what players on the Mets will ultimately end up being traded. Even Jacob deGrom, the teams’ lone all-star, is not off-limits.

That is why it is so encouraging to see Alonso shine when he did. I know it is only one swing and one game but it is still important.

The Mets’ farm system is still overall pretty weak. Sandy Alderson was not the best at drafting but did well getting Alonso ready.

It is nice to see that at least some point in the future and likely during a rebuild, the Mets will at least potentially have one great player.

We have seen these Mets top prospects come through the ranks before and flounder. However, many have thrived as well. We have seen people be hyped up like Alonso before but this time it feels different.

If Michael Conforto cannot be the guy, Brandon Nimmo does not prove enough, or Amed Rosario does not stay hot, then maybe Alonso will be the one who does it the best.

Regardless, I have never seen a home run like the one he hit on Sunday before. It is so pure and so well hit, and a record-breaking hit. Just one swing shows he has all the credentials to be the Mets’ next top-guy.

All the Mets fans have right now is hope. That swing is the symbol of that hope for the Mets. Peter Alonso, in one swing, shows us more about the future in 2018 than anyone actually on the Mets.

Let’s see if this one actually works out. Because, quite honestly, hoping he does workout, is all the Mets have right now. The best part of the unknown future. Just call the man up?
