Neal Sterling

More from Empire Writes Back

We start with the incumbents at the position. First up is Neal Sterling. He is a guy we didn’t see much of until the season went south. Once it did he got his share of reps, posting six receptions for 82 yards. Previously he played for the Jaguars and recorded 12 catches for 110 yards in 2016. He’s a guy that was more serviceable as a blocker.

He was an intriguing prospect coming out of school, with the ability to be a hybrid TE/WR. At the Combine, however, he wasn’t fast, dropping dash times of 4.62 and 4.64. No doubt this was a big part of the reason he was selected in the seventh round.

This is a guy that is going to need some good work on special teams to be kept around. With six tight ends in the room the situation is already going to be tough. With players that have more explosive potential it is going to be even more difficult.

Standing at only 6-3 is not going to help either when players that stand at 6-6 are in the room. Don’t count him out but he just may be a victim of numbers.
