As we look at how the New York Mets are preparing for the deadline, they appear to believe their own false hype and continue to make excuses for themselves.

There is a garage sale getting ready to happen with the New York Mets. Another season is going away and there will not be a playoff appearance in the team’s future. Despite the excitement of going into the season with five healthy starting pitchers it was not to be. The Mets are getting ready to be sellers at the deadline.

But how committed are they really to a rebuild? There is some evidence to the contrary. We already know that they aren’t looking to wait two to three years for a complete rebuild. Just ask John Ricco of the three-man GM team. He said that he is looking for the team to compete in 2019.

Ricco has also already stated that the Mets need to be overwhelmed in order to move either Jacob deGrom or Noah Syndergaard. According to the NY Post, the Mets are more interested in moving Syndergaard than deGrom. This is both interesting and a bit backwards. Most Mets fans won’t be surprised about that, however.

First of all let’s examine the idea of moving Noah vs. Jacob as the Post did. Jacob deGrom has hit 30 years old. Syndergaard is not set to be a free agent until after the 2022 season. Jacob is already making $7.4 million and eligible for salary arbitration after the next two seasons. He won’t be making nearly what Jacob is making until around 2021.

Now should the Mets give away Jacob deGrom? Of course not. The general manager would be run out of town if that happened. But being open to the idea is essential. Hey is arguably the best pitcher in the National League right now. He is at the peak of his value and the Mets could likely get a killing for him.

And why would anyone risk Syndergaard at this point? He has had his injury problems as we all know. Not withstanding the electric stuff that he does have, he is a risk at this point.

What the Post noted and I agree is that the Mets are making excuses for themselves. They are setting the parameters up so high so they won’t have to make a decision. Nobody will bring an offer anywhere close to what the Mets are looking for so they won’t have to deal with it.

Now if you take it even further you will see how they believe their own false hype.

Next: David, it's time to go

They have also said that they would be fine if Yoenis Cespedes was healthy and if Jay Bruce was playing to his career numbers. Jay Bruce?!?!? The Mets got rid of this guy last year and he is back because nobody wanted him. He was hitting .212 before he got hurt this year. They traded him away even though he hit 29 home runs last season. One year ago they didn’t even believe in the guy they are using as excuse now.

And Cespedes healthy? He only played 81 games last year and only 37 thus far in 2018. Can we really count on that? At 32 years old that might not happen again. They also mention the regression of Michael Conforto. Granted, he has regressed. OK. So if he hadn’t done that they would be better. It’s meaningless. HE DID REGRESS. The Mets have to deal with that now, not think about what if he didn’t.

See what they are doing? They are making excuses for themselves. They are convincing themselves that the don’t need much of a rebuild. They are obsessed with their own roster and believing their own false hype. That’s a bad sign for the immediate future.
