In the midst of an otherwise fantastic season, the New York Yankees find themselves stuck between a rock and a hard wall with the struggling Sonny  Gray.

The New York Yankees probably have the best lineup in baseball. They also have two reliable pitchers in Luis Severino and CC Sabathia. However, there is still an obvious need for pitching.

It’s not only that they need pitching, that has been obvious. There need for pitching is even more suffocating than expected because Sonny Gray, who has ace potential, has become unreliable.

Gray is coming off another awful outing in Toronto. He has been struggling in two different countries now. However, is there really anything the Yankees can do about it?

The New York Yankees, as the season progresses, know exactly what they need to go from contender to sure thing. They need another starting pitcher, which we have talked about. Now, they could use another more reliable infielder for depth. A first baseman would help.

So, with that being said the Yankees can’t really do anything about Sonny Gray. The team needs to be buyers at the deadline and should not really trade Gray.

The Yankees also do not really have any options, at this point in the season to pull him from the rotation. Even when Masahiro Tanaka comes back, they still will need an extra arm.

The Bombers are stuck between a rock and a hard place. If they keep Gray around, he will cost them games, but if they give up on him and move him to the bullpen or trade him it will make their only need more glaring.

At this point, I feel as if the Yanks should just keep Sonny out there. Only pitch him when any other starter is not on five days rest and let him find his way back to where he was.

Can he handle New York? Probably not. But at this point, we all have to look at the silver lining. The Gray trade has not exactly worked but the Yankees still got him for a very good price last year.

The Yankees are one of the best teams in baseball when coming off a loss. So, even if Gray gets rocked the rest of the team is proving they can come out the next night with a win.

If the Yanks manage their rotation to have Severino or CC pitch after Gray, it will lighten the blow of his bad outings.

But, the Yankees cannot really do anything about his struggles right now. They need to make a deadline move. Perhaps improve elsewhere too, then reevaluate Gray. But they cannot afford to call someone up from their system to see if it works. That would be throwing games away.

When Gray pitches it is fine to expect the worst. He is showing he is not a top-tier rotation guy and the lest reliable so far. But we have seen his stuff and know he still has a gem or two left in him.

That is fine for the Yanks. They are in a place where the playoffs are almost a lock so they should just adjust to what they have in him and not overcorrect his performance. Manage the bullpen right on games before he pitches, hit aggressively, whatever they need to do.

Sonny Gray is struggling. It is one of very few Brian Cashman swings and misses. But, still, despite it all, it is still “sunny” in the Bronx.
