New York Mets: Five players who need to survive the pending roster purge
Seth Lugo
Since coming on the scene in 2016, Seth Lugo has proven himself to be quite valuable. That couldn’t be more true in 2018. Granted, he performed more than admirably in 2016 and 2017. Coming into this season he posted a record of 12-7 in 26 career starts. Lugo has done a fine job in the absence of starting pitchers missing due to injury.
This year he was moved to the bullpen. Lugo has appeared in 28 games and 23 of them have been in relief. So far he has presented a record of 3-3 with an ERA of 2.70. At 28 years old, Lugo is just hitting his prime and the Mets have been the beneficiaries. As a reliever, batters are hitting .194 against him.
Lugo needs to stay around also because of that versatility. This team can’t avoid the injuries, and that especially goes for the pitching staff. Noah Syndergaard hurt his finger and it seems like we haven’t seen him in ages. There will be opportunity for spot starts. The fact that Lugo can extend himself and perform as a starter makes him invaluable. The Mets will be well served to keep him around.
