Jacob  deGrom

More from Empire Writes Back

There has been a lot of talk regarding this guy as the trade deadline has approached, and rightfully so. Some would argue that Jacob deGrom is the most valuable trade piece on the roster. After all, he is a candidate for the Cy Young award.

He’s only 5-4 but boasting a league leading 1.84 ERA. Of the young staff, deGrom has been by far the most durable, starting at least 22 times in each of his first four seasons. In all but three of his 2018 starts, deGrom has gone at least six innings. At 30 years old he has more than come into his own.

It may be a moot discussion anyway. The NY Post reported that in response to deGrom’s frustration he has been told that he is important to the future of the franchise. He may very well be staying around after all and it is the right move.

Jacob obviously is a supreme talent that can be built around. He also becomes an attractive reason for free agents to come to Queens. When the Mets go recruiting players, these players need a reason to come. Most of them want a chance to win. I don’t think Yoenis “My Hip Hurts” Cespedes is the draw anymore. Besides the talent, deGrom needs to stay to keep the Mets as an appealing place to come and play.
