New York Mets lack passion and make games unwatchable

The New York Mets have become impossible to watch, and with all the losses, the biggest issue has become a lack of passion.

The New York Mets and their fans have watched another season go down the tubes. What started out with great promise early has become anything but as the season has rolled along. Their June record of 5-21 is the worst in franchise history. The Mets reside at the bottom of the division and it doesn’t seem like there is much hope of them coming out of the cellar.

Injuries can take some of the blame. Wouldn’t it be nice if Yoenis Cespedes were to play some day? Remember him? The return of Noah Syndergaard wouldn’t hurt either. But then again, remember that every team has injuries. It’s all about how you rebound from those injuries. The successful teams rebound well, the others don’t.

The roster isn’t any good. The lack of talent has been evident since the run to the World Series in 2015. Sandy Alderson has provided the team no depth to deal with injuries. The hitting has faltered. The starters have been hurt and been inconsistent, other than Jacob deGrom. To their credit, Steven Matz and Zack Wheeler are pitching better which is a good sign if the rest of the team can help out.

Bullpen is almost a four-letter word. They are just bad. No lead is safe. Monday night they blew a 6-0 lead that Wheeler handed them. Frankly, they have become very difficult to watch. You know they are bad when cooking shows become more enjoyable to watch than the Mets. The same goes for Law and Order reruns, though it was a great show.

The worst part has become abundantly clear. Look at these guys faces. Watch their body language. Brandon Nimmo is the exception. He has a grin on his face for days. The rest of this Mets team? The passion is gone. They are going through the motions waiting for another season in Queens to end.

Some of it falls on the shoulders of Mickey Callaway. We understand that he is a first year manager. Many think he needs to go and that is a debate we can have. The fact is that he needs to be able to rally these guys and make them at least seem to care. Right now that isn’t happening and some of the blame is his.

However, it’s on the team as well. These guys need to find it within themselves to play with passion. Maybe they need to take a couple of lessons from Nimmo. But for now, not only are they playing badly, they are playing like they don’t even care. That’s a problem.
