The Tavares watch is over but the result wasn’t what New York wanted. John   Tavares has agreed to a seven year contract with the Maple Leafs.

All of Saturday was overtaken by “TavaresWatch” on social media. Where would John Tavares take his services? Would he remain with the New York Islanders, or would he sign somewhere else? All day we waited for the big news yet nothing came. Sunday is here and the news is finally in. Unfortunately for Isles fans, not only is the watch over, but the Tavares era is over as well.

Tavares is headed to Canada to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs on a seven-year contract worth $11 million annually. It’s a homecoming and a dream come true for Tavares who grew up rooting for Toronto. Take a look at this picture he posted on Twitter:

It’s hard to fault a guy for wanting to play for the team he rooted for all his life. All of us reading this post, if we were invited to play for our childhood favorite teams, would jump at the chance.

In nine years with the Islanders, Tavares averaged 69 points per season. He averaged just over 30 goals per year and last season was just shy of his career high, posting 37 goals. Tavares was a member of the All-Rookie team and was part of five All-Star games. He was a shining light on many Islander teams that didn’t perform as well as fans hoped.

It seemed like this was bound to happen after Saturday came to a close. Midnight came and there went the deadline for the Islanders to sign Tavares to an eight year contract. He went on a whirlwind free agent tour and settled upon Toronto.

Isles fans are disappointed, but with Barry Trotz and Lou Lamoriello leading the way they are in good hands.

We’ll leave you with Tavares’ words to the Islanders family:

"I’ve been so fortunate to be an Islander not only because of the love and support of the fan base, but because of how lucky I was to be around so many great people. From ownership through management, staff and of course all my teammates, they helped me mature and grow into who I am today. I will always be thankful for how they molded and guided me to be a better person and hockey player. Memories and friendships that I will forever hold close to my heart. Thank you everyone for your impact on me, I will always be grateful. My words will never be able to fully show the impact my time on the Island had on me.”"
