The NBA Draft is Thursday night and the New York Knicks have the 9th overall pick. However, there is an interesting way they can take over the draft with a possible trade.

I recently read a brief article by Collin Loring of EliteSportsNY with an interesting concept to jump-start the New York Knicks‘ rebuild.

The article proposed an idea that leads to an interesting draft day trade. The proposal is trading for Chandler Parsons of the Grizzlies. The trade breaks down like this according to the article:

The Scenario is interesting on several levels. But, for argument’s sake, I’m only going to focus on the draft part of this concept for now.

In this trade the Knicks end up walking away with the fourth and ninth overall picks in a studded draft. Unfortunately, they do eat a bad contract.

However, they may be able to move on from some of those contracts once spring rolls around. (Hey anything is possible if Dwight Howard is on the Nets now!)

With the Fourth overall pick the Knicks have a chance to grab a star in the making. This would be the first of two top 10 draft picks in this years draft. They would select the following player:

4th Overall Pick Mohamed Bamba, Freshman C/PF

Bamba is a 7 foot center with a 7-9 wing span would be an excellent center piece help bring back the Knicks stanched defense that David Fizdale is looking to create.

With Bamba on the team, the Knicks would be looking at two true shot blockers in Kristaps Porzingis and Bamba. Together they would be able to change the plus/minus numbers for the positive just from the protection in the paint they would provide.

Now, remember in this scenario they still keep their original pick at nine. With that pick they can still get their original guy:

9th Overall Pick Michael Porter Jr, Freshman SF/PF

The Knicks get an early Christmas gift if they get Porter who I believe is the second most talented player in this draft.

He is arguably another development project for Fizdale to get his paws on. I already went into great detail about my feelings towards Michael Porter Jr. in a previous column.

The Knicks would give themselves a foundation of youth and the ability to be much more flexible in the future.

This is potentially what the Knicks draft night can look like for years to come. If the teams can agree on the Parsons deal it does wonders for the Knicks. The pros will end up out weighing the cons.

Sure, the Parsons contract doesn’t look great, but neither does Joakim Noah’s. This deal would benefit the Knicks greatly.

By adding these two young, generational talents, it gives  Frank Ntilikina, Damyean Dotson, Emmanuel Mudiay, and Trey Burke a chance to get significant minutes at positions that they can succeed at thoroughly.

This trade would be beneficial to give the Grizzlies a chance to go all in with the stars they have and a new secondary scoring option in Hardaway Jr.

It also gives the Knicks the chance to actually build the right way and begin to trust the process. But, all this speculation ends on draft night where the future begins for a new staff.
