The New York Yankees took a massive blow when they lost Jordan  Montgomery for the year. However, Domingo  German, the man who replaced him, is getting into a groove. How does that change their season?

The New York Yankees keep striking water in the well. Whenever it seems to run dry, they figure it out. It is almost incredible.

The latest installment of this analogy is the success of Domingo German. No, German has not been perfect this season. He is taking the similar bumps and bruises all rookies do.

German threw a gem vs a very good Seattle Mariners team in his most recent start. He was even pitching well before that.

His only real issue now is his inability to get off to a good start and dial in early. That is not even going to be a long-term issue because his confidence will go up.

Even if German gives up three runs a game, or around that range, isn’t that fine? He is not the team’s ace and he was initially supposed to be a short-term fix.

But, now that he is continuing to throw filthy stuff it is time to start thinking about a more permanent spot in the rotation.

It’s not that I really felt he would get bumped from it, it just felt like he was eventually going to be unreliable.

Now, that does not seem like the case. At the time of the Jordan Montgomery injury, even before that, the Yankees desperately needed to bring in an elite, cold-blooded, upper-echelon pitcher.

But the more we are seeing out of German, the less quality pitcher they actually need to acquire at the deadline.

Yes, the Yankees can still use an arm or two to bolster the staff but they don’t need anybody fancy anymore. German has been bringing it and he might just be the guy they need.

The Yankees do not need the Jacob deGrom‘s or Cole Hamels‘ of this deadline now. They were going to be tough to get anyway. They can now keep their better, more promising prospects and settle for a drop off in talent for starting pitching.

The Bombers don’t need anyone who is even that much better than German, just more experienced. They can maybe add another arm for depth and insurance too.

But getting patch players for just a few months and still be a really good team sounds a lot better than giving up high-end prospects with immense potential for a pitcher to stick around for a few years when the Yankees are still winning anyway.

The deadline is still over a month away so I’m not trying to get to get too carried away here. I am just saying that if German keeps this up he can be an asset for the future and save a bunch more of them for the Yankees while at it.
