New York Islanders: Bringing in Barry Trotz to coach should be no-brainer

The New York Islanders are the only team without a head coach in the NHL. Barring any teams making the irrational decision to fire a coach now, the Islanders should be the team that lands Barry Trotz.

The New York Islanders and Barry Trotz are a match that makes a lot of sense. Now, with the news breaking that Trotz has resigned as the coach of the Capitals, he should jump the ship to the blue and orange.

You probably do not need me to tell you that Barry Trotz is a good head coach. You also do not need me to tell you that he should come to the Islanders.

However, this potential move goes beyond the fact that the Isles’ coaching job is conveniently open. It goes into how these two are a match made in heaven.

Trotz had a lot of failure before success as a head coach. The Isles as a franchise had mostly success before their recent decades of failures. But, there are mostly similarities between the Isles and Capitals.

More from Empire Writes Back

They are not and should not be identical but for Trotz to take this job he needs to think the Isles can succeed with him. The Isles do have a lot of similarities to Trotz’s most recent and best team.

John Tavares, much like Alex Ovechkin before this year, has never played in the Stanley Cup final despite being one of the best players in the NHL.

The Isles, much like the Caps before this season, is now going on decades of borderline ineptitude and a good core of players that just can’t get over the hump of the playoffs.

The guy who got Ovi and the Caps over the hump is Barry Trotz. Lou Lamoriello needs to bring him in.

Lou can build the roster for the long-term and Trotz can get them over the hump. If they bring in Trotz it does not guarantee a Stanley Cup banner by any means.

However, he can help the team develop and build a foundation. Much like he did for the Predators, who he coached for many seasons before the Capitals. He left the Predators as a team with long-term promise, much like he is doing now for the Caps.

As for the Isles, that is what they need. If they can bring Trotz in from anywhere between three to five season, maybe even more, then he will leave the Isles with that very same long-term promise.

This is a no-brainer for the New York Islanders. The Islanders need to finally start spending a lot of money on smart hockey people. Trotz is one of those people. Pay him what he deserves.

I am usually someone who is negative towards the Isles and the culture around the team but Trotz is a guy who, if given time, will help change. It worked for the Capitals eventually.

Yes, the Isles don’t have a goalie like the Caps do in Braden Holtby, but, there is a certain name floating around who the Isles should be interested in, Philipp Grubauer.

Guess what? He was the backup for Holtby and played under Trotz. A lot of the stars are aligning for this to happen. It just needs to now. It is a no-brainer.
