The New York Mets seem to be making a lot of wrong roster moves in 2018. Releasing Adrian  Gonzalez is the one of the few that is right. However, it’s giving away that the Mets are likely about to rebuild.

The New York Mets are beyond recovery at this point. The offense can’t get more than a few hits a game and they are losing at an alarming rate. Not even another Mickey Callaway ejection is saving them.

It does not help that the roster is a mixture of underachieving youngsters, injured superstars, and aging veterans.

So, the Mets decided to finally make a change. As you probably heard, the Mets released Adrian Gonzalez after the Subway Series. The first baseman was immediately replaced by Dominic Smith.

On the surface, it seems like the move is made just to change things up and put the players slumping as bad as Gonzalez was on their toes. However, I believe it is the start of a rebuild for the Mets.

More from New York Mets

The Mets’ higher-ups probably realize how poor this roster is are deciding to go for an all-in rebuild.

Now, hear me out. I know they have not made any trades to exchange talent useless to them right now for future assets but it is likely going to be the move come July 31 at the deadline.

Here is why I see it this way. First off, if the Mets wanted to release Gonzalez just to change things up that is one thing. However, it is replacing him with Smith that shows this.

The Mets could have used the new roster spot to fill bigger needs like the bullpen. Or they could have called up Peter Alonso for an instant shock and upgrade. However, they did none of those things.

Dom Smith has done nothing but underwhelm since his debut with the blue and orange.  The Mets called him up to get younger and also because they simply do not need someone who can perform at a high level right away.

They are willing to let Dom Smith replace him and not be that good right now. We all know he needs more time. It is not an urgent need for the Mets to upgrade or even be better at first.

If it was, they would put Jay Bruce or someone on already on the roster there. But they decided to go with a future plan guy instead.

It is the first of many moves for the Mets. In just around 10 days, the Mets went from being foolish for trading Jacob deGrom to foolish to eventually not to.

Calling up Smith and parting ways with Gonzalez shows they are about to blow it up. Veterans in the lineup and great pitching is not working anymore. The Mets mine as well let the young guys come in and be just as bad but have a higher ceiling and eventually hit their primes.

Who knows how the Mets attack this rebuild. They can still keep deGrom and trade another pitcher like Seth Lugo or, dare I say, Noah Syndergaard.

It  is not up to me what the owner or whoever decide to do but it obvious they are rebuilding.

It is a good thing they are too. There is no direction for this team and they just need to bolster the entire roster from the bottom up.

If the Mets make any type of random run, guess what? They will likely put Dom Smith back down and put a more experienced player at first.

I just don’t see that happening though. The Mets are trying to win and thought they could but simply are not. It is time to burn it down and start over. The game is changing. It is getting younger at that is okay.

The Mets might not seem like they are rebuilding yet by just the Gonzalez move. However, it seems pretty clear that come July they will be willing to deal away some major players.

The rebuild feels inevitable. So buckle up because this is just the beginning. There is no saving it anymore.
