The New York Mets are coming off another pathetic string of losses. At this point, there are no more excuses. So, is it time to ask: Are the Mets the worst team in baseball?

The New York Mets do not have the worst record in baseball by any means. Unfortunately, they are close to having the worst record in the NL.

But this is not the time to be looking at records. When the Mets were 12-2, we said they were the best. So, let’s put all that aside right now. Let’s look at just the baseball.

I am not even going to use the Mets losing to the Yankees twice in a row against them. The Yankees are an elite team and are beating anyone in front of them.

What I can use against them, is how they lost those games. In the two Subway Series games so far the Mets blew the lead in both of them. They got beaten by the long ball in both.

So, they cannot hold a lead. They cannot get run support for their starting pitching that is oddly and miraculously turning it around. The Mets cannot beat anybody.

Anybody includes the Baltimore Orioles who have the worst record in baseball. Before they played the Mets, they were the worst team in baseball but then they swept the Mets in two games on the road.

Ric Flair said it best, to be the man you’ve got to beat the man. Can we use the same in reverse here? To be the worst you have to lose to the worst. Well, the Mets did just that.

They lost to the worst and the best. Therefore, they cannot beat anybody. Some of it is not their fault. I guess playing in Citi Field is really difficult.

The injuries, the lack of offense, the setbacks on those said injuries, I’m sick of it. This team has no spark right now.

Half the offense could not hit a beach ball off a tee right now. If not for a few players who are consistent, this team might never score any runs.

The bullpen which is already not performing well is turning into a depleted injured mess too.

The Mets have nothing going for them right now. They can’t score runs. They can’t win at home. The stars of the team don’t seem to be in any hurry to come back from injuries.

It is going too far. The Mets are becoming the joke of the league. They are that perfectly inept line between tanking but trying to win. No matter how much they try to win, they don’t.

Mickey Callaway is making terrible decisions too. He is down to Jerry Blevins as his closer. He is down to putting Jose Reyes to bat when the game is literally on the line. Reyes is batting .141 this year.

I’m no longer looking at records at this point. I am not going to start considering the strength of schedule. Injuries are such a lazy and old excuse too.

The New York Mets are playing like and very well may be the worst team in baseball.

I would not even be surprised if they win on Sunday Night Baseball vs the Yankees just so that the upper management can talk about how they won that one big game.

At this point, winning a game in the Subway Series, just one, would be the best thing the Mets did since the clinching the pennant in 2015.

Earlier this year, this team was fun to watch. You used to be able to look at them and say they had a great month. Then they had a good week. That then dwindled down to saying they had a good series.

Eventually, we were content when they had one good game. The standard keeps getting lower. So, now, we are content when the Mets have one good inning. One good at-bat. One good swing.

They are the worst team in baseball right now. That honestly might be a blessing. Maybe the inept ownership can finally see how this ship has sailed and changes need to be made.

Sometimes it takes being the worst to eventually be the best again. But it does not even matter at this point in the season.

It is not like a month ago where an overnight fix could have kept the Mets in it. They need an entire month of turning it around to even have a chance to be in the playoff race.

The season is basically over. There are too many damaged things on this team right now. It is one thing to be bad. It is another thing to be open about being bad like some teams.

But whatever the Mets are doing now is inexcusable. There is no justifying anything anymore. These guys are professional ball players and coaches.

The New York Mets are the worst team in baseball right now. It might not even be close. There are a few shining stars like Brandon Nimmo and Jacob deGrom but that is really it.

Next: It might be time to blame Sandy?

The wheels are not falling off, they fell off and into the river. The Mets are no longer “in it”. But now, they have to worry about even more, not being the worst team in Major League Baseball.
