1. 1997: Complete game victory

More from Empire Writes Back

June 16, 1997 was the date and Yankee Stadium was the site. Interleague baseball was fresh and new, making its debut around the country. The matchup that probably got the most notoriety was the Mets vs. the Yankees.

After all there had not been a Subway Series game that counted since 1956, and we know the Mets weren’t even around yet. This was a new world for almost everyone watching live or on television.

The Mets weren’t expected to do much here. They were coming off of a fourth place finish in 1996 that saw an in-season managerial change (Dallas Green to Bobby Valentine). The Yankees had just won their first World Series since the 1980s. Let’s just say the odds were not in favor of the team from Flushing.

What happened that night was the absolute unexpected. The Mets took a 3-0 lead off of Andy Pettite and sustained the attack all night long. They won the game 6-0 and Dave Milicki threw a complete game.

So the opening salvo went to the Mets and it was in memorable fashion. Mets fans only hoped that things would continue in a similar fashion going forward.
