The 2018 MLB Draft begins on Monday and the New York Mets have a top 10 pick. The Mets sit at sixth overall on the draft board and they need to take a third baseman.

The New York Mets need to get younger. That is no secret. One position, in particular, where they need to upgrade is at third base. The blue and orange have not had to worry about the hot corner for the better part of the last decade or so because of how good David Wright was. Now, Wright’s career is all but officially over. We know that story.

Todd Frazier is still a solid player and signing but he too cannot play forever. The Mets have some options as far as depth but it is officially time they find their next infielder of the future. Although third base is not normally a position to build around there still needs to be a stalwart type player who is not a liability but a solid contributor.

With the Mets having one of their highest draft selections in years, now would be the perfect time to fill that need.

The rest of the infield of the future is coming along. Amed Rosario is finally hitting and making spectacular defensive plays. Luis Guillorme is getting his reps in. Top prospect Peter Alonso is soon on his way to play first. It really is a solid foundation but missing just that third baseman. The Mets top third base prospect is Mark Vientos. He was drafted last season but is far away from the big league stage and is only the teams 6th ranked prospect, according to MLB.com’s prospect watch.

More from Empire Writes Back

The Mets have a plethora of pitching depth on the roster and in their prospect pool. Any team run by Sandy Alderson will.

Despite the wild season that the Mets are having in 2018 so far, deep down somewhere there is a foundation. A missing piece will be filled this draft.

The upcoming draft class, perfectly, has a few highly touted third basemen. The Mets need one of them more than anything.

Johnathan India out of Florida and Alec Bohm from Wichita State, and Nolan Gorman from an Arizona high school are just a few of the guys who could land in Queens.

The MLB Draft is so deep. There are enough rounds that the Mets can truly try to find their next third basemen. They can at least get one early on so that he is ready for the MLB sooner rather than later.

The writing on the wall screams that the Mets will indeed go this route but it is smart. It is a smart decision and one that helps build the foundation which is slightly losing direction.

Of course, pitching is always possible. That is what the Mets like more than anything but the only true position, at every level of the franchise, that needs to be deeper is third base.

Next: Rosario turning the corner, finally

I cannot emphasize it enough.  Drafting a third baseman would not only be the smartest thing to do but the only logical one as well.

Getting a guy who already has all the skill but just needs to develop timing, the grind, and personality to play at an elite level soon is key.

The Mets do not seem to be too far off once all the veterans retire or part. This is the draft for the Mets to get this done.

The sixth pick is a great one in baseball. Let’s hope the Mets do not mess this up.
