The New York Mets need to start helping Jacob deGrom or he may not want to stay in the Big Apple much longer.

Jacob deGrom is the most underrated pitcher in the MLB. Not only does he put up the stats to prove that, but he proves it every night he toes the rubber for the New York Mets. It seems as though it is the consensus that deGrom is the second-best starter on his own staff by media even though that should not be the case.

deGrom is a bona fide No. 1 starter and should be treated that way. Yet, the New York Mets don’t seem to back him up in games where he absolutely deals for them.

Since entering the league, deGrom has posted stats that should put him in the conversation of being a top-five pitcher in the game. His 2.85 career ERA puts him fourth in the league, behind the likes of Clayton Kershaw, Jake Arrieta, and Corey Kluber and right ahead of Max Scherzer. Although he has the fourth-best ERA since getting called up to the big leagues, out of those top five starters, deGrom ranks dead last in wins.

More from New York Mets

deGrom has a measly 49 wins compared to Clayton Kershaw who has the next lowest win total at 66. The 17-win difference for deGrom could be why he doesn’t get treated like a Kershaw type. This also shows the lack of run support the Mets produce in his starts.

Not only has deGrom performed well on the field, but he’s actually been on the field. Noah Syndergaard, the aforementioned “No. 1 starter”, has made yet another trip to the disabled list this season, Steven Matz has continuously found himself on the DL throughout his career, and Zack Wheeler has not lived up to his potential because of injuries.

Jacob deGrom has been New York’s best, most consistent starter since he’s donned the blue and orange. This year, he has posted a 4-0 record with a 1.52 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 65.1 innings pitched. Those numbers are just flat-out ridiculous. He should also have more wins but the Mets continuously surrender his leads.

Next: Where has the Mets' starting pitching depth gone?

With that said, the New York Mets should be nervous about deGrom’s long-term future in the Big Apple as he has just two years of arbitration eligibility left. If the Mets plan on paying Syndergaard like the No. 1 starter he is treated like, rather than paying the proven deGrom, Jacob might not want to stay in Queens.
