New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres was named American League Player of the Week on Tuesday and then came through with a walk-off single against the Houston Astros.

The New York Yankees have a star-studded roster with players like Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge, and others. You can now count second baseman Gleyber Torres as one of those stars.

Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday that Torres was named American League Player of the Week for the week ending May 27. It’s the first Player of the Week honor for Torres and the second for the Yankees this season as Didi Gregorius earned the honor in April.

Last week Torres hit .368 with five home runs and nine RBI in six games. On Friday he became the youngest player in American League history to homer in four straight games.

Gleyber wasn’t just good last week, he’s been good all year and is becoming the Yankees’ and baseball’s next big star. This season he’s hitting .321 with nine home runs, 26 RBI, and has a .976 OPS. He leads all rookies with 1.7 wins above replacement and ranks second among rookies in home runs and RBI.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone believes that Torres has become a very special player.

“I’ve had that conversation with him where he says, ‘I’ve been preparing for this my whole life,’ and certainly the last couple of years coming up in the Minor Leagues,” Boone told Jaylon Thompson of MLB.com. “I think he just plays the game with a lot of confidence. I think his intelligence is very evident. When you combine intelligence and instincts and talent, you’re looking at what has been a very special player for us.”

Torres is a special player and someone you want to root for. He has stepped up while Giancarlo Stanton and Gregorius are struggling. Entering play on Tuesday, Stanton was 0-for-12 with seven strikeouts in his last three games in the Bronx while Gregorius was in the middle of a 4-for-70 slump. Torres recently moved up to fifth in the Yankees lineup, probably due to the struggles of Stanton and Gregorius. However, he was moved back to ninth in the lineup for Tuesday’s game.

Torres continued to produce from the nine-hole, going 2-for-5 with two RBI including the second walk-off of his young career, helping the Yankees complete their comeback win against the defending champion Houston Astros.

Gleyber shouldn’t have been moved back to ninth in the lineup. He has earned the fifth spot in the lineup and should move back there. Why move him back to ninth? Moving Torres back to ninth in the lineup just because a struggling Stanton is back in the lineup is a bad move on Boone’s part. As long as Torres remains hot, Boone will have no choice but to move him up the lineup.

Next: New York Yankees need to add multiple starting pitchers

By winning American League Player of the Week and coming through with a walk-off single against Houston, Gleyber Torres is proving that he is a star and he will be one of the New York Yankees’ biggest stars for years to come.
