New York Giants: Three free safeties New York should consider signing
Tre Boston
Tre Boston was probably one of the most under-the-radar feel-good stories of the 2017 season. After spending the first three years of his career as a reserve safety for the Carolina Panthers, the UNC product was unfortunately waived before the 2017 season.
After just two weeks on the market, Boston signed a one-year, veteran minimum deal with the Los Angeles Chargers and he absolutely flourished in his new home. In his first season as a starter, the four-year veteran more than doubled his career interception total, recorded career-highs in passes defended (8) and tackles (79).
Safeties with that kind of production are usually in high demand on the free agent market, but Boston is still without a home for one reason and one reason alone: He’s just a one-year wonder. However, that could play to the Giants’ advantage.
A contract between PFF’s 30th-best safety and New York would be mutually beneficial for both sides. Signing Boston to a team-friendly one-year contract would provide a big upgrade to a Giants team that still thinks they can win now.
Boston, on the other hand, will get another year to prove he’s worthy of a big contract, which he could get from New York when you consider the amount of cap room the team will have in 2019.
